quelleGeorge Lucas Starting Work on a Brand New Star Wars Trilogy?

After the relatively tepid response to the Star Wars 3-D re-release announcement from a few weeks ago, it’s pretty clear that there is a certain level of apathy setting in when it comes to the George Lucas and the Star Wars universe. There are only so many times you can see the same thing regurgitated before you get bored, and only so many times the promise of something new and exciting can be pulled out from under you before you lose faith. But hold on a minute folks, all is not lost. It seems that there may be something else on the horizon. You might even call it… a new hope. There are reports that George Lucas is now in the early planning stages on a brand new trilogy of Star Wars feature films. Are you surprised? Do you even care? Read on for the details.
According to IESB (who apparently have some reliable sources inside Lucasfilm), Lucas is gearing up for a series of new Star Wars movies that would likely hit theatres once all six existing films have been put out in 3-D. That would probably put them in 2016 at the earliest, which is still quite a ways off.
It seems that James Cameron’s Avatar has inspired Lucas, and he will be using his experience with the 3-D conversions to learn as much as he can in order to shoot something specifically suited to this new format. The obvious comparison here is the Special Edition re-releases in the mid-’90s, which gave him the inspiration, the funding and the technical knowledge to do the prequels. But will these new movies be any good?
The inside source claims that the movies will not be related to the live action Star Wars TV series, which will still happen on its own at some point. Instead, they will probably end up being the long-rumoured Episodes 7, 8 and 9, taking place far after the original trilogy. Apparently Lucas wants to move far into the future so that he will not be required to have any connection to existing storylines or characters — including the Skywalker family. Does George Lucas have what it takes to reinvigorate the franchise? Only time will tell… but at least now we have something to look forward to. I guess?
