James Cameron meinte es ernst, als er letzten Sommer davon sprach, dass er mehrere Fortsetzungen von AVATAR drehen möchte - es sollen insgesamt drei (!) Fortsetzungen werden. Ächz.
AVATAR UNIVERSE EXPANDS TO THREE SEQUELS
James Cameron Hires Writers to Collaborate with Him on the Films
LOS ANGELES (August 1, 2013) __ Marking a significant expansion of his already ambitious plans for the much-anticipated AVATAR sequels, Academy Award®-winning filmmaker James Cameron announced today that the films have grown in number from two to three.
Additionally, to help bring his growing AVATAR universe to life and to expedite the process, Cameron has hired screenwriters Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planets of the Apes) and Shane Salerno (Savages, Salinger) and Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) to collaborate with him on the screenplays for the three films.
The three pictures will be filmed simultaneously with production beginning next year. The release of the first sequel will be in December 2016, with the second to follow in December 2017, and the third a year later. AVATAR 2, 3, and 4 will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through their Lightstorm Entertainment banner. Like the original film, Lightstorm will work with Joe Letteri and his team at WETA Digital to realize the worlds of the sequels.
Commented Cameron: "Building upon the world we created with AVATAR has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience. In writing the new films, I've come to realize that AVATAR's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh -- all writers I've long admired - to join me in completing the films screenplays."

AVATAR is the highest grossing film of all time, and is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. The film won Golden Globe® awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director; and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won Oscars for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.
AVATAR was written by Cameron from an idea he nurtured for over a decade, while working on the technology necessary to realize its wholly imagined world. Working with WETA Digital, Cameron created a fully immersive 3D cinematic experience of a new kind, where revolutionary technology that was invented to make the film disappeared into the emotion of the characters and the epic nature of the story.
The three AVATAR sequels will mark Cameron's latest collaborations with 20th Century Fox, a relationship that spans nearly 30 years and marks one of the most successful filmmaker-studio alliances in motion picture history. Cameron and Fox first joined forces in 1985 for Aliens, which became a sci-fi classic. Next came The Abyss, which revolutionized visual effects technology; then came the blockbuster, True Lies. In 1996, Fox greenlighted Cameron's Titanic, which became the most successful film in history, and won a record-breaking eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Darum hat er ja gleich vier (!) Drehbuchautoren verpflichtet.

Besser, als wenn er wieder selbst die Scripts verfasst. Bei seinem üblichen Tempo würde das ca. 36 Jahre dauern

Das waren auch meine Gedanken. Ich freue mich ja, dass SF im Kino so eine große Rolle spielt bzw. spielen wird, aber bei Avatar bin ich draußen.

Da man in Neuseeland Angst um die gerade erst für HdR und den Hobbit entstandene Filmindustrie hat, gewährt die Regierung eine Steuererleichterung von bis zu 25% für die drei Avatar-Filme, die ebenfalls in Neuseeland gedreht werden sollen. Voraus ging die Zusicherung von Lightstorm Entertainment und Twentieth Century Fox mindestens 413 Millionen US-Dollar für die Filme in Neuseeland auszugeben. Das echte Budget wird wohl eher bei einer 1 Milliarde liegen...

Ich gönne denen ja ihre Filmindustrie, und ich finde Avatar vom Weltenbau her auch wirklich toll, aber naja.
Wenn wir Glück haben, fällt denen für Teil zwei eine originelle Story ein.
Also eine, bei der man nicht sofort errät, wer lebt, wer stirbt und wie die Story ausgeht.
Sondern mehr sowas wie in "Das Imperium schlägt zurück".
Wenn nicht, wird es mehr sowas wie "Titanic"...

Ein Termin für den Beginn der Dreharbeiten ist momentan nicht festgelegt, dafür haben 20th Century Fox und Lightstorm Entertainment bereits eine ungefähre Dauer für die Drehphase anberaumt. Laut The Wrap sollen «Avatar 2 – 4» für neun Monate Halt in Neuseeland machen. Angeblich winkt die Filmemacher dafür eine Steuererleichterung von 25 Prozent statt der derzeit üblichen 15 Prozent.
Habe einfach mal neugierig recherchiert: Steuererleichterungen Avatar Neuseeland. Da steht so einiges.
Ich frage mich nur: Welche Steuern meinen die?

Wenn man bei Filmen wie dem Hobbit oder dem Herrn der Ringe sofort drei Teile back to back dreht, dann halte ich das für sinnvoll, da die Vorlagen einen so großen Fankreis haben, dass der wirtschaftliche Erfolg garantiert ist.
Bei Avatar bin ich da skeptisch. Auch wenn Avatar damals Unmengen Zuschauer hatte, ein Franchise wie Mittelerde, Star Wars, Potter oder das Marvel-Universum ist das nicht. Die Zuschauer gingen scharenweise in den Film, weil es der erste Film war, bei dem 3D einen tatsächlicher Mehrwert bot. Inzwischen scheint aber doch eine gewisse 3D-Müdigkeit Einzug zu halten.
Und dass Horden von blau angemalten Fans vor den Türen James Camerons lautstark für drei (!) Fortsetzungen demonstriert hätten, wäre mir auch neu.

Bei HdR und beim Hobbit gibt es auch einen filmübergreifenden Handlungsbogen, und alle wissen das.
Also selbst Leute, die die Bücher nicht kennen.
Oder die Millenium-Trilogie.
Bei Avatar hat der erste Teil am allerwenigsten mit der komplexen, wohldurchdachten und [unzutreffendes Qualitätsmerkmal Eurer Wahl einfügen] Story gepunktet, von einem Regisseur, der jetzt eigentlich auch andere Stärken hat. Soll nicht heißen, dass ich mir das nicht anschauen werde, aber ihr seht mich irritiert. (Ok, es spart nicht nur Steuern, sondern auch Kosten, aber ob das so viel ausmacht? Ein CGI-Programm später nochmal einzusetzen, ist doch eher weniger teuer, als z.B. eine Kulisse drei Jahre irgendwo einzulagern, oder?)

Ach, hab jetzt gelesen - 400 Mio. für drei Filme vs. 300 Mio. für einen Film.
Wenn das so stimmt, kommt mir das kaufmännisch gesehen doch wie ein guter Plan vor.
